Family Meeting 2: FAMILY and The Gift of Being Human

Intro:

Marcus and Erin – who are we?

FAMILY:

We touched on the idea last week, but this week, we’re going a step further….

F

-        move to the Font in the Church

F is for Faith. We were all baptized (maybe no here at this font) but we were baptized into the Catholic faith. This year is about learning what it means to be Catholic and to make Catholic moral decisions. We are going to challenge you. We are going to push you, but ultimately, it is our goal that you are going to come away knowing why you believe what you believe and knowing how to make moral choices by using your Catholic faith.

We’re going to use this idea of “FAMILY” to also make our class rules. What are guidelines that come to mind when we think of “Faith?” (respecting the faith of others whether it seems deeper or less/deep than our own…. Respecting that we aren’t always going to agree with everything the Church teaches right off the bat, but we need to take the time in this class to understand where it all comes from…)

A

-        move to around the Altar

A is for Acceptance. We are going to create an atmosphere of acceptance for everyone in our class. This is a safe place to be yourself. Be who God created you to be. When we accept each other, we don’t have to accept the sins – we accept the person.

God created each of us with dignity. What does that mean?

Recognizing that each person has human dignity is the cornerstone of Catholic morality. This means we respect everyone regardless of race, age, economic status, education, contribution to society, sinfulness, etc. We accept them as a person who is to be respected and treated with love. We all share God’s soul. This is what makes us human.

Catechism (1711) says “Endowed with a spiritual soul, with intellect and with free will, the human person is from his very conception ordered to God and destined for eternal beatitude.”

What does that mean?

So for Acceptance, we need to know each person and we’ll start with our class.

Play the Name Game – Each person comes up with a descriptive word/action then says their name. The next person says “Hi (then repeats the person before that)” then says their own name. We go around until everyone has gone.

M

-        move to where they stood around the Altar at Confirmation

M is for memories. Close your eyes and think back to Confirmation. What were you challenged to do at Confirmation? What does it mean? How does that affect this year?

Confirmation is only the beginning.

I

-        Give out the questionnaires

Give them 5-10 minutes to fill out the questionnaires. They pick a spot around the church and fill them out. Each week, we’ll feature someone in the class to get to know more. Marcus and I will pic the fun facts based on what you put on this sheet.

L

-        Go back to the classroom at this time

L is for Love. Based on what we talked about with Human Dignity. What can we say about how we should love each other? What are ways that we can show love?

At school, we challenge each of you to show God’s love to our class. Say hi to each other – even if you have different groups of friends. You know each other. You have this shared experience. Join together to do it.

Y

-        In the classroom

You are a gift. We need each of you to be present and to be here to contribute. God make each of you unique and special. Everyone tells you that all the time. But do you really get it? Do you live your life like that everyday?

Have each person take a turn to stand in front of the mirror – either say out loud or in your head that you are God’s masterpiece.

Once you finish, take a minute to write God a letter. We’ll seal the letter and put it into the box. We’ll give it back at the end of the year.
